AHOI am Whitehorse woman and I walk the path that was laid down for me by my grandmother as hers was by her grandmother, as has been since the beginning.
My grandmother was a Cherokee Holy Woman. She worked with herbs and spirit to heal. She understood the circle and spiral. She passed what she knew to me as her grandmother had done to her. I walk the circle each day of my life (some call the circle the medicine wheel) and I use the spiral as did my grandmother for healings when needed. I have walked through the door of elder and have made my pledge.
For six months out of the year, from spring equinox to fall equinox, I work for money to feed me. The work I do is helping orchardists reduce or eliminate the use of pesticides in apple and pear orchards.
This is not changing them from conventional to organic for there is no pesticides used to replace the ones that are no longer used. Instead there are insects used. This work takes a great deal of my time during the growing season watching insect populations and the balance of predator to prey.
Growers are used to seeing me barefoot in their orchards sometimes sitting praying over their crops. Many have seen me making offerings or heard my chants as I walk among their trees.
This work is sacred work to me. It is the oath I took when I accepted the role of Grandmother. Part of the oath was to work at returning the balance on our sweet Mother Earth. So for money this is what I do. From fall equinox to spring equinox I do my creating.
I do pottery on a wheel and do mostly raku firings. I do basketry, reed, pineneedle and gourd. I make glass beads and do some fused glass pendants.
I also bead anything that is still long enough. I have been holding circle (group gatherings for prayer and healings) in my home for ten years now. I teach about the medicine wheel, the spiral and walking in balance. Every once in awhile someone will talk me into teaching on one of my creative things.
